Power-assisted steering that responds to every situation
Electric power-assisted steering (EPAS) automatically adjusts to your speed and the conditions.
At low speeds, the system makes wheel turns feel lighter and easier, improving manoeuvrability. At high speeds, when you need greater control, it firms up the steering. Now with drift control, EPAS also takes into account crosswinds and other driving conditions, while active nibble control reduces any unwanted vibration in the steering wheel.

Sees what’s coming, from either side
A tiny camera, on the front of the All-New S-MAX, relays a split-screen image to your car’s Multi-Function Display so you can see vehicles, cyclists or pedestrians coming from either side. This optional new technology option is invaluable if you’re edging out of a narrow parking space, or onto a busy road where your view is obstructed. (optional)

Stress-free parking and pulling out
Using a combination of different technologies, Active Park Assist does more than steer you into parallel parking spots. With Park Out Assist (POA), it helps you pull out of them, too. The Perpendicular Parking (PPA) system can sense if there’s space for your car to fit, then reverse you in. Side Parking Aid (SPA) also warns you if there are any lateral obstructions (optional)
Easier reversing, as you can view what’s behind
Bollards, railings low walls… the rear view camera shows whatever’s behind you on a screen built into the centre stack display and activates automatically when you select reverse gear. The system also displays virtual guidelines, to help you park in the smallest of spaces. (optional)
An advanced system to help you stay in lane
A Lane Keeping System uses a forward-looking camera to detect if you’re accidentally drifting out of lane. Lane Keeping Alert then warns you by vibrating the steering wheel and displaying a visual warning. If you're slow to react or don’t respond, Lane Keeping Aid can provide steering assistance to help guide you safely back into the right lane. The technology is designed for multi-lane roads (like motorways), so will automatically deactivate at speeds below 65 km/h or can be turned off manually.

With the All-New S-MAX, you can choose from three different transmissions. A 6-speed manual gearbox has a high torque capacity and delivers smooth, accurate gear-changes. A 6-speed automatic also has a high torque capacity and carefully tuned shifting points for maximum power and efficiency. There are also the options of all-wheel drive and 6-speed Ford PowerShift.
Ford PowerShift gearbox. Fast and fuel-saving
Combining the convenience of an automatic with the control of a manual, this advanced six-speed gearbox pre-selects the next gear for you so you don’t lose power when you change. PowerShift’s lightning fast, seamless gear changes make driving smoother while saving fuel and lowering CO2 emissions compared to a normal automatic.
Paddle Shift: enjoy rapid gear changes on an automatic
Normally only found on high end sports cars, Automatic Paddle Shift Controls are available with both the 6-speed automatic and PowerShift transmissions. This racing-inspired technology puts swift, effortless gear changes at your fingertips. The innovative Ford Eco Mode system continually assesses the effects of your driving behaviour on your fuel consumption. The system analyses your speed, gear shifting, braking and anticipation levels, plus the number of short and long journeys you make. Smart software then advises you on how to improve fuel economy. Use less fuel with Auto Start-Stop
When you stop at traffic lights or your car is idling in a queue, this technology can automatically switch off the engine (while still supplying power to essentials like the headlights, air-conditioning, radio and the Ford SYNC system). When you're ready to move, just depress the clutch and select first gear as usual, or press the accelerator on an automatic, and the system restarts. Auto Start-Stop is particularly effective in town and city streets, where it can cut fuel consumption by up to 10% (urban cycle). (standard)
A more efficient way to re-charge your battery
Unlike traditional systems, Smart Regenerative Charging only charges the battery when it needs it and, whenever possible, avoids doing so when you’re pressing the accelerator. This can help save even more fuel and further reduce emissions. (standard)

A system that can help protect pedestrians
Pre-Collision Assist with Pedestrian Detection detects people and vehicles in the road ahead, or who could cross the vehicle’s path, and warns you of their presence. If you don’t respond, the system automatically applies the brakes. This new technology is designed to help reduce the severity of accidents, or help avoid them altogether, and functions at speeds of up to 80 km/h.
Headlamps that help you see around bends
Adaptive lighting with Ford Dynamic LED headlamps aren’t just striking; they’re smart. A series of LEDs deliver a precise light pattern and their intensely bright natural light provides exceptional illumination. Day time running lights are also included. And LED tracer turn indicator strips replace traditional ‘blinking’ lights, illuminating in sequence for high visibility to other drivers. In addition, Glare Free High Beam adjusts itself automatically, maximising visibility without dazzling other drivers. Remarkably, these new headlamps/lights also follow the road, helping you to see more clearly when driving around bends. (optional)
Extra power for emergency braking
Emergency Brake Assist (EBA) helps your vehicle achieve maximum braking effectiveness in an emergency situation. It’s controlled automatically via the ESP system, which senses how much pressure you’ve applied to the brake yourself and automatically increases it, if necessary. (standard)
Mirrors that see what you can’t
A Blind Spot Information System (BLIS) can help you change lanes more safely, thanks to RADAR sensors that scan the blind spots on either side of your vehicle. If they detect a vehicle you can’t see, an orange light, displayed in the corresponding side door mirror, illuminates to warn you. BLIS also features a completely new technology, Cross Traffic Alert. (optional)
Ford SYNC 2 with Emergency Assistance
An important aspect of Ford SYNC 2 is Ford Emergency Assistance*. This potentially life-saving feature is designed to assist you in placing an emergency call and can provide the emergency services with information about your vehicle’s location, in your own language. You can choose to stop the call, or talk to those services if you need to. Crucially, the system will supply vital information, such as your GPS coordinates, even if you are unconscious.
*Ford Emergency Assistance operates in over 30 European countries. This feature works when paired with a compatible connected mobile phone that is with you when an airbag is deployed (excludes knee airbags) or a sensor that registers a crash deactivates the fuel pump. Text function and Emergency Assistance not supported by all European languages.
Confidence in challenging conditions
The car is equipped with an Electronic Stability Programme (ESP), which incorporates a range of technologies designed to keep you in control. Sensors detect any sudden changes in steering, braking, or vehicle behaviour that may cause you to lose control, and then ESP precisely adjusts the speed of each individual wheel, making your car more stable and helping to prevent skidding. ESP features include Hill Start Assist, Emergency Brake Assist and Electronic Brake Prefill.
Extra control during hill starts
Hill Start Assist temporarily stops you rolling backwards or forwards when making a hill start. The system works by maintaining pressure to the braking system for an extra 2.5 seconds, giving you more time and control as you move your foot from brake pedal to accelerator. It’s also useful when you’re stopping and starting on slippery surfaces. (standard)
